This presentation discusses the available design guidance for welded joints in tubular steelwork, principally Eurocode 3: EN 1993-1-8:2005. It gives an overview of typical joints and includes consideration of member eccentricity and the effects of geometry on joint strength. It also reflects on fabrication costs of various joint configurations and discusses pre-tender design considerations, such as member validity checks and possible failure modes. An overview of the Tata Steel joint design software is presented.
