How will the window fittings market develop in 2018?

According a report published by AMA Research, the window and door fittings market is set to keep growing as we approach the end of the decade.

The market saw a 3% growth in 2017, a smaller margin of growth when compared to 2016. The market research company suggest that this is typical of today’s construction market as a whole, with greater emphasis and demand for higher specification products.

Though marginal, the growth in this market is steady and is set to continue to rise until 2020.

Fittings market growth

Despite the steady growth the market has not seen a great deal of change in product offerings, with locks and handles continuing to account for over half of the fittings market. Door closers are, however, now estimated to have gained around 15% of the market showing a stronger than average growth.

But how can the fittings market grow and develop? What are or could be the main drivers for change?

The report comments on product development being influenced by a number of factors, namely fashion, legislation and technical issues. Naturally, new security standards play a key role in product improvement, being one of the main drivers of change.

Technological advances in door and window automation have also become significant in product advancement. As the demand for quick and easy access grows so will the automated fittings market.

The fittings market appears to be quite fragmented with specification either in the high value, high spec end of the market or the low cost, more basic end. On the lower end it appears that the industry standard white PVC hardware is declining in popularity where brushed chrome, brass, bronze and nickel finished are before more popular. On the higher end full suite glazing systems and rooflights are becoming more and more fashionable.

The report says that due to the wide range of options and styles available in the market many companies just operate in one or few of the product sectors.

Looking towards the future the main drivers for growth are likely to be the trade up to higher specification products, especially those with additional security features aimed at the commercial sector. Another key player will be improving output levels as energy efficiency becomes more of a concern in the commercial and housing markets.
