King’s Road Park forms part of a 17-acre regeneration scheme set to provide over 1800 new homes to West London. Plot 1A of the Berkeley Group development includes both residential and commercial facilities along with private communal amenity space, a health club and basement car parking. The large flat roof features both extensive green roofing and a roof terrace for a penthouse apartment.
AYM Services oversaw the installation of the roof insulation and waterproofing system. An inverted roof construction was selected for the terraces and, in order to meet the target U-value of 0.15 W/m2K whilst also maintaining an even transition from internal floor levels, the OPTIM-R E Inverted Roofing System was installed above the Alumasc Derbigum system.
The OPTIM-R E Inverted Roofing System features vacuum insulation panels (VIPs) which are encapsulated in a specially developed coating for added robustness.
The microporous core of the panels is evacuated of air, encased and sealed in a thin, gas-tight envelope. This allows them to achieve excellent performance with a thermal conductivity as low as 0.008 W/mK, and a design thermal conductivity as low as 0.009 W/mK.
The OPTIM-R E VIPs are accompanied by Kingspan GreenGuard infill panels of the same thickness. These can be cut to fit around penetrations such as outlets, roof lights or ventilator kerbs, and used to fill any awkward gaps around the perimeter. The system is then overlaid with a further layer of Kingspan GreenGuard insulation. Each installation is supported with a dedicated design service, allowing the target U-value to be met with best possible ratio of VIPs to infill panels. This can reduce the overall construction depth.
For the King’s Park Road project, the design service developed a system layout featuring 30 mm and 40 mm layers of OPTIM-R E VIPs and infill panels, and a further 30 mm layer Kingspan GreenGuard. These were overlaid with an Aquazone water-infiltration membrane, followed by the finished paving on supports. This approach allowed the target U-value of 0.15 W/m2K to be achieved with a total insulation thickness of just 100 mm.
The bespoke system layout also helped to streamline the installation by AYM Services, clearly indicating the positioning of the panels and where infills were required. Kingspan Product Technicians were on-site during the installation to provide best practice support. In addition to carrying out site visits to inspect the quality of installs, the Technicians can also provide in-person training sessions covering best practice when fitting insulation.
“It was collaborative effort from all involved, starting with the initial design, planning the procurement, through to onsite installation. Collectively the team overcame challenges to maintain and ensure the quality standards required were maintained, the programme was achieved, with the end product meeting all the project and client requirements”
