Parkland Vet Practice commissioned the main contractor to build a new facility in Dungannon Northern Ireland. As a part of the design of the new premises a subterranean area was created to house internally stables for the practice. As the area was retaining earth on 3 elevations the structure need to be waterproofed.

Newton Specialist Basement Contractor Ulster Damp Proofing Group (UDPG) were commissioned to design and install a robust waterproofing solution.

Methodology
The new build structure was designed with an RC slab with starter bars presenting at the wall floor junction to accommodate two skins of block work with infill concrete. This shell formed the retaining walls of the basement area and also provided a platform to span the internal steel super structure to form the basis of the building. Once the shell of the basement was constructed UDPG installed the Newton 508 cavity drain membrane to all retaining aspects of the build. The 508 Membrane was held to the structure with Newton MultiPlugs which also acted as securing points for an internal non load bearing skin of block which was rendered as the finish.

After a lime inhibitor was sprayed onto the slab Newton Basedrain was sat on top of the RC slab and 50mm of closed cell insulation was laid next to the Basedrain. Then Newton 508 was installed on top of the insulation with a 65mm screed as the floor finish. This design meant that when any water ingresses through the block work, the weight of screed displaces water back to the perimeter channel for removal.

• The installation of the Newton System 500 meant that no extensive surface preparation was required to the new block work to accept an internal or external Type A barrier membrane, meaning a quick and cost effective installation.
