World Cleanup Day is one of the biggest global-civic movements of our time, created to tackle the world’s large-scale littering problem. Most of the waste ends up in the ocean, harming sea life and damaging the ecosystem.
Advocates for protecting the environment
Newton are big advocates for taking action to reduce plastic waste and improve the environment. Therefore, when BITA (the British and Irish Trading Alliance) joined World Cleanup Day, as members of the BITA community, they joined too!
On Saturday 18th September, Newton’s team gathered outside their offices at 9am and split into multiple groups, taking different routes around Tonbridge, before convening at Tonbridge Park.
By splitting into several groups, it allowed them to clean as much of Tonbridge as possible. It was a great day out for all those involved, and the day ended having collected over 25 bags of rubbish! Newton are excited to get involved with next year’s event.
Newton thank the Tonbridge Green Party for joining their efforts and supplying the litter pickers and thank everyone who attended the event and did their part for the community.
Newton’s recycling & sustainability initiatives
Newton have several innovative sustainability initiatives and are committed to reducing their impact on the environment wherever possible.
The initiatives include the Newton Recycling Service, their highly successful and award-winning closed-loop recycling service that was the first of its kind in their industry that is run in collaboration with their nationwide network of Specialist Contractors.
The scheme operates through their team of dedicated drivers who collect plastic waste from site, returning it to Newton’s head office in Tonbridge, Kent.
From here, it is processed into chips to be made into new construction products. Newton have prevented over 20 tonnes of HDPE Membrane from going to landfill and preventing 22.79 tonnes of CO2 emissions from being released into the atmosphere.
In 2021, this service has been expanded to also recycle plastic and metal containers from Newton’s liquid waterproofing products. They estimate that this will save over 7,000 containers from landfill each year. You can read more about Newton’s sustainability initiatives here.
