King’s College Hospital is home to a world-first CCU rooftop garden, designed as a fully operational outdoor extension of its Critical Care Unit. The 170 sqm terrace enables critically ill patients to safely benefit from fresh air and natural daylight while remaining connected to essential medical equipment.
With fire safety and regulatory compliance key considerations from the outset, Wallbarn supplied a fully Class A fire-rated decking substructure. The system comprised MetalPad Ex adjustable steel pedestals, aluminium rails, and Class A rated fixings and connectors. It was designed to support a non-combustible decking finish while meeting the stringent fire performance requirements of a regulated healthcare environment.
The suspended system also accommodated extensive medical services beneath the deck, while maintaining access for ongoing inspection and maintenance. Delivered within a live hospital environment, the project demonstrates how specialist technical design and close collaboration can help create a world-first healthcare environment while meeting complex practical, safety and regulatory requirements.
