MemTech Pro Liquid Gas Barrier (LGB) Membrane

MemTech Pro Liquid Gas Barrier (LGB) is a liquid applied Gas Barrier Membrane. MemTech Pro Liquid Gas Membrane is a distinctive red, ready for use specialist styrene butadiene latex based liquid applied gas membrane. It offers a simple, continuous passive gas prevention barrier against the ingress of Methane, Carbon Dioxide, Radon, Ground Gas, VOC, air and Moisture into buildings. MemTech Pro LGB also acts as a waterproofing membrane complying with the requirement C2 and C4 schedule 1 of the Building Regulations 1991 for England and Wales.

MemTech Pro Void Vent 25 - MemTech Pro Void Vent 25 offers a passive venting solution which facilitates the dispersal and dilution of dangerous gases. MemTech’s Pro Void Vent 25 has been specially designed to provide for high levels of air and/or gas flow.
MemTech Pro Void Vent 25 is a cuspated HDPE (High Density Polyethylene) Membrane with a geotextile filter/separator. Void Vent 25 has been designed to be installed with the geotextile filter side of the product to be in contact with the ground to allow for air and/or gas flow. Void Vent 25 is available in either a 25mm or 40mm depth. MemTech PRO Void Vent 25 complies with the latest codes of practice (BRE, CIRIA and NHBC).

MemTech Pro Ancillaries
MemTech Gas Protection membranes come with a range of sealing tapes, detailing strips and ventilation accessories to optimise their installation. Generally where possible and practical joints between the MemTech Pro Membranes should be heat welded, where this is not possible or practical we recommend the use of MemTech sealing tapes and detailing strips.

Radon
Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas found in many structures, it is the second largest cause of lung cancer in the United Kingdom (second to smoking). Radon accumulates in buildings through cracks in rock or sub-soil caused by atmospheric pressure. Radon is frequently found in homes and workplaces, which is why Radon should always be identified if your site is in a radon risk area.

To find out if your project/property/structure is within a designated Radon area log on to Public Health England (PHE).
Radon levels vary in concentration. Whilst radon is found in open air (in very low concentrations), when it enters an enclosed spaces, such as buildings and basements, it can accumulate in high concentrations. Delta Gas Barrier System Radonsperre, Memtech M1 & R1 Membranes and Memtech LGB are suitable solutions.

Landfill Gas
The production of Landfill Gas is a recent problem; prior to the Clean Air Act 1956 all domestic waste was burnt. Organic waste produces gases. All waste (industrial, domestic and demolition) generate large quantities of Landfill Gas.

Landfill Gas is caused by bacteria. The gases produced are Methane (CH4) and Carbon Dioxide (CO2).
Carbon Dioxide and Methane are colourless and odourless Gases. Trace gases found in landfill tend not to represent a health hazard; however the distinctive landfill odour is caused by these types of trace gases.

Ground Gases
Ground Gas is predominately Methane (CH4) and Carbon dioxide (CO2) which presents a similar risk to that of Landfill Gases. Ground Gas is formed by man-made and natural occurrences. Building Regulations state that proper precautions should be taken to prevent danger to health and safety when building on contaminated land.

Carbon Dioxide (CO2)
Carbon Dioxide is commonly found in landfill, contaminated industrial sites or coalfields. Carbon Dioxide is a colourless gas that can result in asphyxiation when present in high levels.

Methane (CH4)
Methane is an odourless explosive and flammable gas that is commonly found in sewage treatment localities, peat bogs, landfill and mining sites. Methane can ignite at levels as low as 5%.

For suitable gas protection membranes for Methane and Carbon Dioxide in accordance with Table 7 BS 8485: 2015 Methane & Carbon Dioxide Permeability must be below 40ml/day/m2/atm (BS EN ISO15105-1manometric test method).

Memtech M1 gas barrier, Memtech LGB (liquid applied) gas barrier comply with the requirements of Table 7 BS8485:2015.

Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs)

Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC’s) are generally organic compounds that are volatile under normal environmental conditions, they can be found in the ground in solid, liquid or gaseous form.

Some of the frequently encountered VOC’s on building sites on contaminated land are Benzene, Toluene, Chlorinated Solvents and Ethers.

VOC barrier membranes need to perform against specific challenge VOC’s in order to be considered a barrier. CIRIA C748 – provides guidance on the use of plastic membranes as VOC vapour barriers. BS8485:2015 – Code of Practice for the Design of Protective Measures for Methane and Carbon Dioxide Ground Gases for new buildings:

The code of Practice provides a solution choice flow chart and appropriate gas protection measures should be selected using this method based on the CS of each site.

Once CS level for the site has been assessed, the building should be categorised by building type, by combining the CS level with the building type a gas protection score can be determined. Once this is determined then using the following 3 elements a gas protection system can be appropriately designed:

• Structural Barrier (the building)
• Ventilation measures
• Gas resistant membrane

The design requires 3rd party verification along with installation monitoring in accordance with CIRIA C735.

Always ensure your gas protection products offer a safe solution for the protection of buildings, adhere to the appropriate standards and Building Regulations.
