Mul-T-Lock eCLIQ hits the target by helping to secure firearms

The National Crime Agency, the British Association for Shooting and Conservation (BASC) and the police have collaborated to provide firearms security advice in a document entitled ‘Protect Your Firearm, Protect Your Sport’.

The guidance advises that all firearms should be locked up securely and hidden well when not in use, and gun cabinet locks and keys should not be shared with unauthorised people – including family and friends – for any reason.

In addition, the Home Office’s ‘Firearms Security Handbook 2019’ includes guidance on storing and transporting firearms safely for all gun owners, as well as those with access to firearms such as the police, museums and galleries, and people storing firearms for business purposes.

In the ‘Warehousemen’ section of the handbook, it states: “In the interests of both owner and company, the warehouse employees or others should not normally have access into locked/sealed containers. If this is necessary, there should be a system for recording:
a) By whom, when and for what reason(s) access to the container has taken place,
b) The result of any examination of the state of the contents and the notification made to the owner, or his authorised agent.”

This is true for all types of organisations and businesses storing firearms, as well as registered firearms dealers. Due to this legislation, security specialist Mul-T-Lock has seen a great deal of interest in its eCLIQ access control system – with multiple sales across the Republic of Ireland and momentum growing in the UK.

A completely electronic locking system, eCLIQ cam locks can be quickly and easily retrofitted to any existing mechanical door lock and eCLIQ padlocks are ideal for securing firearms and ammunition cabinets for multiple applications, including external settings.

With eCLIQ, if a key is lost or a member of staff leaves, access can be revoked, which not only offers enhanced security but also significantly reduces whole life costing, as it removes the need to replace physical locks; and keys can be validated daily, weekly or monthly to keep them continuously secure.

The CLIQ® technology includes the ability to schedule individual access permissions for each key, as well as the ability to provide time-limited access and revoke access to particular keys as and when needed, making it particularly useful for firearms retailers that are required to adhere to Home Office guidance.

What’s more, the eCLIQ system’s audit trail capabilities mean that business owners are provided with comprehensive data illustrating who accesses which lock, where and when; ideal for those who want to determine who should have access to certain firearms.

Working on a modular system, eCLIQ locks are quick and easy to install with no cabling required, offering an easy-to-install and low maintenance solution for registered firearm dealers. Not only is maintenance not required for up to 200,000 cycles, but key batteries are also fast and easy to replace once every 30,000 operations, at a nominal cost to the business, with no need for specialist tools.

eCLIQ also allows locksmiths to build a strong connection with customers, since only the locksmith who originally created the system can extend it. This therefore provides locksmiths with a subscription-based revenue stream, which also helps meet customers’ ever-changing needs.
